About this Course

This course aims to introduce students to dyslexia and language acquisition deficiencies. The incidence of dyslexia falls within the international incidence of 3% to 10% of the population. Hence, this course provides the practical knowledge of supporting students with dyslexia through an explicit and simultaneously multisensory instruction.

 

This course is designed to give both professionals and family members a valuable overview of the common condition called dyslexia and how to support students with dyslexia through conceptual teaching, planning and lesson delivery. The target audience may be a teacher who needs an insight into how to cope with dyslexia in the classroom, a parent who wants to support their child at home or other professionals and specialists who support students with learning differences.

 

Learning Outcomes

 

On successful completion of the module, participants will be able to:

  • About Dyslexia
  • Understand the implications of dyslexia on literacy
  • Apply the principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach to lesson planning and delivery
  • Conduct an informal assessment to identify the literacy needs of students with dyslexia
  • Recognise the essential components of a literacy lesson
  • Plan and execute lesson components using the strategies provided

 

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT

 

  • Written Exam – theory and application (in-class)
  • Oral Test – phonics knowledge (in-class)
  • Role-play – group work to apply practical skills of lesson planning and execution (requires preparation time outside of training hours)

 

Note: Assessment is compulsory for students in the Specialist Diploma in SpLD

 

CERTIFICATION AWARDED

 

  • A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance and successfully pass the assessment.
  • A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance but do not wish to undertake the assessment.
