About the Course

 

This course aims to enable participants in understanding and supporting learners who have difficulties with Mathematics, including those with dyslexia. The incidence of dyslexia falls within 3% to 10% of the population. Students with dyslexia have been found to display difficulties in learning Mathematics. Hence, this course provides the theoretical and practical knowledge of Mathematical learning, and understand how individual differences affect the learning of Mathematics.

 

This course is designed to give both professionals and family members a valuable overview of how to support struggling learners in Mathematics through identifying and assessing individual needs, as well as practical strategies in supporting these learners. The target audience may be a teacher who needs an insight into how to cope with teaching Mathematics to struggling learners in the classroom, a parent who wants to support their child at home or other professionals and specialists who support students with learning differences.

 

Learning Outcomes

 

  • Understand the learning differences relating to Mathematics
  • Understand the implications of dyslexia on Mathematics
  • Conduct informal assessment to identify mathematical needs of students with dyslexia
  • Appreciate the elements of a Math lesson and use of teaching/learning materials through the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach
  • Apply knowledge and skills to support learners struggling with place value, the four basic operations, and basic word problems

 

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT

 

Design a Teaching Resource & Reflective Paper (due 15 working days after the last day of the module)

 

Note: Assessment is compulsory for students in the Specialist Diploma in SpLD

 

CERTIFICATION AWARDED

 

  • A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance and successfully pass the assessment.
  • A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance but do not wish to undertake the assessment.
