Workshop Objectives
Brief Course Content
This workshop explores why some children struggle with reading and how these challenges can impact their motivation and attitudes toward reading. Parents will learn how to foster reading habits through shared reading experiences and by creating a reading-friendly environment at home. The session introduces Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a framework for supporting motivation by meeting children’s needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
Parents will also be introduced to interactive read-aloud strategies such as PEER, CROWD, Bloom’s Taxonomy, and Thinking Hats that promote engagement and build vocabulary through meaningful conversation. Participants will engage in hands-on practice and leave with practical tools to establish reading routines and a print-rich home environment that nurtures lifelong literacy.
