About the course
This course aims to enrich participants’ knowledge and practice of intervention planning based on the Assessment, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation (APIE) model, a framework which ensures that the interests of the child and all other stakeholders are factored into the process of intervention planning. Designed to help participants grow in their understanding of how to prepare Individual Education Plans (IEP)  for one-to-one intervention with learners of specific learning differences, it takes a problem-based approach and will introduce practical strategies and tools to answer key questions that must be addressed at each stage of the IEP planning process.

A Certificate of Achievement will be awarded to participants who attain at least 75% attendance and successfully pass the assessment.

The target audience may be teachers who need to craft specific strategies for supporting learners in any area of behaviour or learning, in order to support struggling learners in the classroom, parents who want to support their children at home, or other professionals and specialists who support students with learning differences.

Participants who may benefit from the strategies crafted by participants in the course include:
Learners in Preschool, Primary or Secondary level struggling in any area of learning and behaviour.

On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply a problem-based approach to preparing IEPs for one-to-one intervention with SpLD learners.
  • Use a variety of data collection methods to improve information gathering about the learner’s profile and needs at the Assessment stage of the IEP planning process.
  • Set measurable goals and objectives when writing a learner’s IEP at the Planning stage.
  • Use observation and informal assessment tools, eg. checklists and questionnaires, to monitor the learner’s progress towards IEP goals at the Implementation stage.
  • Ask reflective questions to guide their systematic review of an IEP at the Evaluation stage.
