ABOUT THE COURSE
This course builds on the knowledge and insights gained from the CiDLT module. Recognising the
importance of higher-order skills beyond phonics components, this 21-hour module examines specific areas and explores practical strategies to support learners in the English Language.

The fact that learners can have additional difficulties that impact on their learning (not just basic literacy demands) should not deprive them of the academic knowledge and skills they can receive. It is hoped that this course would equip and prepare participants, both educators, and parents, to plan and deliver holistic lessons that cover a wider spectrum of the English Language continuum with their learner’s needs in mind.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The target audience may be a teacher who needs specific strategies in supporting learners in higher order literacy skills (Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading comprehension, Writing and Morphology) that might be helpful in supporting struggling learners in the classroom, a parent who wants to support their child at home or other professionals and specialists who support students with learning differences.

Learners who may benefit from the strategies shared in the course include :

  • A learner in Primary level struggling in English Literacy Skills.
  • A learner in Secondary level struggling in English Literacy Skills.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Recognize that learners need to procure additional skills (organizational and regulatory abilities) beyond literacy competence in order to succeed academically
  • Attain knowledge and skills to progress beyond a phonics-based approach to concepts of higher- order thinking and understanding in areas including morphology, reading comprehension, grammar, writing, study skills, and vocabulary.
  • Integrate both practical and content knowledge in designing a holistic lesson with the use of
    suitable resources to promote learning
