Good morning, honoured guests, faculty members, fellow graduates, and friends. My name is Tan Xin, and I’m truly honoured to speak on behalf of the graduates of the Specialist Diploma in Educational Therapy (Chinese Language Support). Let me begin by briefly introducing myself.
A few years ago, I was working as a software engineer. I spent years writing code, fixing bugs, and sitting in front of a computer all day. Then one day, I decided to try something completely different. I became a Chinese language teaching assistant at an international school — and everything changed. Instead of computer screens, I now faced smiling, noisy children. Instead of typing, I was using my voice every minute — teaching, encouraging, explaining… and sometimes just trying to get everyone to sit down!
To my surprise, I really enjoyed it. There was so much joy in hearing students call me “老师.” I loved being around children and wanted to help them — especially those who were struggling with Chinese or had specific learning differences. But soon I realised that while I had patience and passion, I lacked the professional knowledge and skills to truly support learners with special educational needs. One day, a colleague told me about DAS. The moment I heard about it, I knew it was exactly what I’d been looking for. And that’s how I ended up here.
The past year hasn’t been easy. The training for this Specialist Diploma is intense. On top of our teaching work, we had to complete theory modules, lesson observations, practicum, supervised teaching, and assignments. It was tough — but every challenge was worth it. I gained valuable insights into learning difficulties. I understand my students better now and can support them more effectively. When I see them go from being pushed into class by their parents to walking in with big smiles, or from staying silent to trying — even with great effort — to express themselves in Chinese, I feel deeply encouraged. I’ll never forget the confident smile of a student with ASD and dyslexia when I praised him for getting an answer right. He looked at me and said, “See, I’m getting smarter.” That moment really stayed with me. Nothing is more meaningful than helping a child rediscover hope after repeated struggles. And for that, all the hard work has been worthwhile.
Of course, I didn’t do this alone. I want to thank the amazing people who supported me along the way.
To our lecturers and mentors — thank you for your guidance, encouragement, and for always having our backs, especially during unexpected challenges.
To my fellow warriors — our little team of four — thank you for walking this journey with me. From sharing stories to supporting one another through late nights and deadlines, your presence made a big difference.
To my students — thank you for letting me try out new ideas and resources with you! You constantly inspire me to reflect and grow as a teacher. Some of the clever ways you invented to remember Chinese characters have already been passed on to other students.
To my fellow graduates — congratulations! This journey wasn’t easy, but we made it. We’ve grown not only in knowledge, but also in heart. We now carry with us both the tools and the compassion to make a meaningful difference in the lives of learners who learn differently.
And let’s also take this moment to celebrate with our families — our greatest source of strength and support.
As the ancient saying goes: “师者,所以传道、授业、解惑也。”
Through my learning journey at DAS Academy, I gained more than just teaching techniques — I came to understand the true responsibility of being a teacher: to understand every child, believe in every child, and walk with them through their challenges, until they find their own light.
The power of education is never in loud applause, but in quiet, lasting impact.
Finally, to all educators — present and future — let’s carry this spirit forward: to guide, to support, and to never give up on any child.
Congratulations once again, Class of 2025!
