About the Course
Why do some children participate confidently while others withdraw, avoid tasks or display challenging behaviour?
This course helps educators look beyond what they see on the surface to understand the developmental, motivational and environmental factors influencing children’s learning and behaviour. Participants will examine how classroom demands, relationships and barriers to learning can shape engagement, then explore practical ways to create more responsive and inclusive learning experiences.
Through case discussions and structured problem-solving activities, participants will develop a more thoughtful, strength-based approach to supporting children. The course also highlights the importance of working collaboratively with families, professionals and other stakeholders to plan support and review its effectiveness.
Target Audience
This course is designed for professionals and practitioners in the education, disability, and social service sectors who work with learners with special educational needs (SEN) or additional learning needs. It equips participants with the knowledge and practical strategies to better understand, support, and empower diverse learners across different settings.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
- Explain how theories of child development, motivation and learning inform practice in educational settings
- Identify possible causes and functions of children’s behaviour
- Apply differentiation and barrier-identification frameworks to enhance engagement and motivation
- Use a strength-based approach when interacting with and supporting children
- Apply a problem-analysis framework to examine behaviour, develop action plans and evaluate outcomes collaboratively with transdisciplinary teams and relevant stakeholders
