ABOUT THE COURSE
This course aims to introduce students to dyslexia and language acquisition deficiencies. In Singapore, the prevalence of dyslexia amongst the population is estimated to be 10% of which 4% will have dyslexia severe enough to warrant intervention. Hence, this course is designed to give both professionals and family members a valuable overview of the common learning difference called dyslexia and how to support students with dyslexia through conceptual teaching, planning, and lesson delivery. It also provides practical knowledge of supporting these students through explicit and simultaneously multisensory instruction.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is designed for preschool educators, primary and secondary MOE school
teachers, Special Educational Needs (SEN) officers, parents, caregivers, and any other
professionals interested in enhancing their ability to support students who are facing
challenges in learning or with diagnosed learning differences.

Learners who may benefit from the strategies shared in the course include:

  • A younger learner who needs support with phonological awareness and letter-sound relationships for reading and spelling.
  • An older learner who struggles with decoding and segmenting unfamiliar poly-syllabic words

LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of the module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what dyslexia is
  • Apply the principles of the Orton-Gillingham approach to lesson planning and delivery
  • Identify and assess the learning needs of students with dyslexia
  • Recognise the elements of a lesson and use of teaching/learning materials
  • Apply practical strategies to support students with dyslexia in decoding and encoding
